Our first meeting in the New Year, the February meeting, will be another lunchtime meal in the Shamrock Restaurant at the Celtic Club.

Guest speaker for this meeting will be Rick Dobson, a very loyal and supportive VFFA member, and the very friendly and approachable proprietor of the Aussie Angler tackle store.

Rick is a very skilled and experienced angler who has fished top locations all over the world. He feels that it’s perhaps a bit too easy these days for us to be sidetracked by all the latest fads and fashions floating around.

Members will be delighted to hear that the guest speaker for our Christmas Dinner on December 15 will be Philip Weigall. Philip hardly needs any introduction, being so well known to us all as a top Victorian fishing guide, author, fly fishing commentator, and editor of the very popular online magazine FlyStream.

Andrew Briggs is a Catchment Coordinator for the North East Catchment Management Authority. His particular interests and areas of responsibility include the Ovens and King River valleys.

Each year the Latrobe Valley Fly Fishers invite members of the VFFA to travel to Thorpdale to meet with the Latrobe Valley anglers and fish their stocked dams. The Latrobe Valley club is very active and has eight or nine dams on farms in the local area which are stocked with browns and rainbows.

Our guest speaker for the October meeting is Gavin Hurley, manager of the Pro Angler tackle stores. The Pro Angler stores organise a number of fishing trips each year to exciting locations in such places as Tasmania, New Zealand, Chile, Christmas Island, UK, Scotland, Iceland and Alaska. Gavin will provide members with information, pamphlets and details for each of these trips, and his presentation will include lots of spectacular photos of the fishing opportunities at these venues, along with some stunning recent video material.

VFFA – Annual Dinner – Friday August 29th 2016 at 6.30 for 7pm.

The upcoming August Annual Dinner with feature 3 important events in addition to dinning with VFFA friends members. This year’s Dinner is our 84th Annual Dinner.

Many members will be aware that Christopher Bassano is a top Tasmanian guide and member of the Australian Fly Fishing team representing us at World Championships. Many will also own the two superb fly fishing DVDs

The June meeting will be another lunchtime meeting with guest speaker Jim Higgs. Jim is a VFFA member, an accomplished fly caster, and a keen saltwater fly fisher. His experiences fishing for hefty pelagics in Sydney Harbour were described in our March issue earlier this year. But many will also be aware that Jim was a top leg spin bowler who represented Australia at the international level. He played District Cricket for Melbourne University whilst studying Civil Engineering, and made his debut for Victoria in 1970.

Each year VFFA members gather mostly on Sundays during the winter months of June/July/August in the closed fishing season the tune up or improve there casting skills. It is also enjoyable social time mixing with other members, most times sharing a barbecue.

April Vokey is a very high profile Canadian fly fisher, fishing guide, casting instructor and TV personality. And she has accepted our invitation to speak at our May meeting.

After discovering a passion for fly fishing in her teens, she has since dedicated her entire life to this pursuit, and has established herself as a respected authority in the sport. She has travelled the globe in pursuit of game fish on a fly rod.
